Alopecia Areata – Overview
Sudden hair loss that starts with one or more circular bald patches that may overlap.
Alopecia areata occurs when the immune system attacks hair follicles and may be brought on by severe stress.
In most cases, hair falls out in small patches around the size of a quarter. There may be only a few patches, but alopecia areata can affect wider areas of the scalp.
If there is a complete loss of hair on the scalp, doctors diagnose alopecia totalis. If there is hair loss throughout the entire body, the condition is called alopecia universalis.
Alopecia can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or race, though most cases develop before the age of 30.
Causes of Alopecia Areata
In alopecia areata, the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, causing inflammation. Researchers do not fully understand what causes the immune attack on hair follicles, but they believe that both genetic and environmental (non-genetic) factors play a role.
Treatment
It’s a self limiting disease. Medicines are given to hasten the hair growth. Sometimes, injections are given in the bald patch to regrow hair.
FAQs
Is alopecia areata permanent?
In alopecia areata, the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles for reasons that are not clear. Fortunately, the follicles retain their ability to regrow hair, and the hair loss is not permanent in most cases.
Is alopecia areata a serious problem?
Alopecia areata isn’t usually a serious medical condition, but it can cause a lot of anxiety and sadness. Support groups are out there to help you deal with the psychological effects of the condition. If you lose all your hair, it could grow back.
When does alopecia areata usually begin?
It can begin at any age; however, most people develop it during childhood or their teenage years. About half them see their hair regrow within 12 months without treatment.
When the hair regrows, it may never fall out again. It’s also possible to have unpredictable cycles of hair loss and regrowth for years.
