What is Laser Facial?

Laser facials, as the name suggests, use different sources of light in a concentrated manner to give you something of a medical-grade facial, which is much better than a salon facial. There are different types of laser facials available targeting different skin concerns, so the ideal dermatologist would take a very good history of your skin and your skin concerns to determine what type of laser facial is best suited for results that you expect.

When looking into laser facials, you’ll likely see various treatments described as either ‘ablative’ or ‘non-ablative’. The basic difference here is that an ablative laser will remove the upper layer of the skin. Non-ablative lasers leave the epidermis intact, bypassing it to directly tackle the dermis beneath. While ablative lasers are usually considered more effective, they traditionally require more recovery or ‘downtime’ after a treatment.

Indications

  • Fine wrinkles
  • Age spots
  • Uneven skin tone or texture
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Mild to moderate acne scars
  • Skin rejuvenation
  • Melasma

How it works?

Laser resurfacing is a treatment to reduce facial wrinkles and skin irregularities, such as blemishes or acne scars. The technique directs short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin, precisely removing skin layer by layer.

Different lasers are available to treat different skin conditions.

Laser for pigmentation
Targets the melanin in dark spots and reduce the production of it. Decreases appearance of dark spots.

Laser for acne scars
Stimulates collagen production and reduces scar by 40 to 50 %. They are usually ablative lasers.

Laser for fine lines, wrinkles
Induces new collagen production and decreases fine lines and wrinkles.

Laser for age spots
Targets the age spots, decreases melanin production in age spots. Stimulates new skin production.

Laser for redness and rosacea
Vascular lasers such as a pulse-dye or Nd:Yag can be used to target redness and thread veins of the face.

Laser for texture and tone
This is where ablative lasers come in. Carbon dioxide (commonly called the ‘carbon peel’) and Erbium are generally considered the lasers of choice for resurfacing the skin to improve overall skin texture and tone, as well as for scarring – be it from acne, trauma or surgery. “They work by boosting the production of new collagen in the skin over time to provide the skin with support and structure.”

Method

Fractional co2 laser

  • Face is cleansed and topical anesthetic cream is applied for 30 to40 minute duration.
  • After that face is sterilized with antiseptic solutions to minimize the risk of secondary infection.
  • The affected area is then treated with fractional co2.

Q SWITCH ND:YAG

The 1064 nm QS-Nd:YAG is well absorbed by melanin and being a longer wavelength causes minimal damage to epidermis. IT destroys the excess pigmentation and helps in maintaining even skin tone.

The laser is used to target the pigmented lesion in the skin, which absorbs the light. The laser heats up and shatters the pigment, which is then drawn to the surface without harming the surrounding tissue.

The pigmented lesions will either fade or dry and even flake off the treated area when it is drawn to the surface. This will leave the skin with an even tone and complexion.

There might be a mild discolouration of pigment before it heals after just a few days. The treated area can also sometimes become more sensitive to sun exposure however with proper sun-safety precautions, the effects are minimal.

Light Therapies

Another popular nonabalative treatment, are light therapies, which are also known as intense pulsed light (IPL) or violet-blue light (VBL). They aren’t lasers, nor do they resurface skin. Instead, they’re a “rejuvenating” therapy.

They achieve many of the same results that lasers do, but in a more targeted, gentler way. “Instead of using one laser that focuses on your skin, [light therapy] uses several wavelengths of light at once.”

Light therapies won’t give you those dramatic before-and-after photos, but they’re great for skin maintenance, “especially for the younger population that doesn’t need much work.” Just keep in mind that because it’s gentler, you’ll need more sessions to see serious results.

This technology carries few risks, but there are still problems with burns and pigmentation abnormalities. “Topical anesthesia is usually enough to make light therapies tolerable.”

Post Procedural Care

After the completion of your treatment you will need to maintain your skin on a regular basis. For the first few weeks and months following treatment your skin will be extremely sensitive to sunlight. While out in the sunlight during daytime ensure to apply a sunscreen on your face and exposed skin and use an umbrella.

  • Antibiotic cream and moisturizer are applied every 2-3 hourly to promote the healing of the skin.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure as new skin is developing beneath the laser treated skin, to prevent development of pigmentation.
  • You might feel little burning sensation, redness and mild swelling that usually subsides in1-2 days, ice pack can be applied to relieve the discomfort. Contact your dermatologist if this doesn’t help.
  • Usual recovery time is 5-7 days.
