Laser for Stretch Marks – Overview
Stretch marks are irregular lines or texture developed on the skin. Typically skin has been stretched or distended. It is a type of scarring common during or after pregnancy, sudden or extreme weight gain or loss, and rapid growth in adolescents.
The most common areas where stretch marks occur include the stomach, thighs, hips, buttocks, breasts, upper arms, and lower back.
Indications
Stretch marks are a sign that your body moved too quickly for your skin to catch up. Stretch marks typically appear when your skin is stretched so suddenly that it doesn’t have time to produce enough collagen to accommodate the new area it must cover.
How it works?
The appearance of stretch marks can be improved with laser treatments. Two types of lasers improve the appearance of stretch marks. Ablative lasers destroy the upper layer of skin and non-ablative lasers target the underlying areas of the skin’s surface without destroying the upper layer.
Laser treatments remain the most effective non-surgical stretch mark treatment option.
Method
- Anesthetic cream is applied to numb the treated area.
- Laser shots are delivered to cure the damage area.
- Mild pricking sensation and burning sensation will be experienced during the procedure.
Post Procedural Care
Apply soothing cream and ice pack to reduce burning sensation.
Treated skin will become brownish in 5-6 days and may appear darker, then it will shed in 7 to 10 days. Apply generous amount of moisturizer over treated part.

Can stretch marks be removed by laser?
While it can’t get rid of stretch marks completely, laser removal may help make striae smoother, thereby reducing their appearance.
How long does it take for laser to remove stretch marks?
New collagen and elastin fibers produced by laser treatments may take several weeks to mature and create a visible difference in the appearance of your skin. For that reason, you may not notice significant results until after one or two treatments, or at least two months after your first appointment.
Can old stretch marks be removed?
The difference in color distinguishes how old the marks are. Though they may never disappear completely, treatment can lighten the color of your marks and shrink them.
How painful is laser stretch mark removal?
Laser therapy for stretch mark removal usually lasts between 30 and 90 minutes, so you won’t be in the office for long. You might feel some slight discomfort during the procedure, but the treatment isn’t painful for most patients.
How many laser sessions for stretch marks?
You will need 3 to 5 treatment sessions to achieve desired results, although some patients may require fewer or more appointments. During your treatment, we will apply a cooling gel to the treatment area to help protect your skin and ensure your comfort while the laser is being used.
