What is Subcision?
Subcision is a minor in-office surgical procedure that’s used to treat acne scars.
It involves inserting a small needle into your skin to release the acne scar from the underlying tissue. This allows your skin to rise and to diminish the appearance of the acne scar.
Indications
Although subcision is most often used to treat acne scars, it may also help reduce scars caused by other conditions, like:
- chicken pox
- wounds
- surgery
How it works?
The procedure releases the scar band which is adhere to underlying tissue and hence allowing the skin to rise and diminish the appearance of depressed acne scar.
This process not only helps to lift a depressed scar, it also triggers the release of collagen at the site of the needle insertion.
Method
- Local anesthesia is given to numb the area.
- Skin is sterilized with antiseptic lotions to minimize the risk of secondary infection.
- Dermatologist inserts nokor or hypodermic needle beneath the skin to break the adhesions. They will then gently move the needle from side to side under the scar to help release the scar from the underlying tissue. You may notice a soft snapping sound as your skin fibers are broken.
- This process may be repeated depending on the size and shape of the scar. Once the procedure is over, manual pressure or ice will be applied to the wound site. This helps reduce bleeding and inflammation.
Post Procedural Care
The procedure down time is 2-7 days.
Mild hematoma or bruise is visible that resolves in 7 to 10 days.
Apply sunscreen lotion and other lotions prescribed by your dermatologist.
