What is Vampire Facial?

A vampire facial also known as PRP facial is a combination of microneedling and platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Microneedling uses short, fine needles to puncture the skin. These needles range in size from .5 to 2.5 millimeters. Rest assured, the needles feel like tiny pinpricks and only go skin-deep. The pricks are used to “injure” the skin, prompting your skin to heal itself by producing elastin and collagen, and allowing the PRP to penetrate deeper.

Once the microneedling is completed, PRP is applied to your skin topically. PRP is a concentrate of platelet-rich plasma protein produced from blood. PRP has a large concentration of growth factors, helping tissue to heal and repair, treating all types of skin issues.

Indications

  • Fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Acne scars.
  • Chicken pox scars.
  • Sun damaged skin.
  • Brown pigmentation.
  • Glow.

How it works?

There’s limited research on vampire facelifts, but one study found that the skin’s texture improved significantly more with PRP than it did with saline injections.

The efficacy of a vampire facelift is because of plasma, which is yellow. Plasma is protein-rich, and it carries nutrients, protein, and hormones to the rest of the body.

Plasma also contains growth factors, which can increase cell turnover, collagen production, and elastin for firmer, younger-looking skin.

The platelets, in particular, contain pockets called alpha granules, which secrete high levels of growth factors “They’ve been shown to be effective for wound healing, as well as improving skin elasticity, volume, and texture.”

Method

Most vampire facelifts will follow the same steps:

  1. First, the doctor will clean your skin. They’ll likely also apply a topical numbing cream.
  2. Then, they’ll draw blood (as little as 2 teaspoons) from your arm. Some doctors may choose to first inject the face with filler, targeting areas with deep creases or wrinkles.
  3. The blood will go into a centrifuge. This separates the PRP from the rest of the blood.
  4. Using a small needle, the PRP will be injected back into the face.

Post Procedural Care

  • You may notice some redness on your face after a vampire facelift, but the procedure itself is noninvasive, and it should require minimum downtime.
  • Try to avoid touching your face in the hours after the procedure. If your doctor says it’s OK, you can use an ice pack to calm swelling and alleviate any pain.
  • You’ll see immediate plumping results from the filler, and the glow and evenness from PRP will be visible after 2 to 3 weeks. Results aren’t permanent and will typically last for 1 year and as long as 18 months.

FAQs

What is vampire facial?

A vampire facial can be useful for those who have scars, wrinkles or sun damage. By reintroducing PRP back into the skin, cell turnover is encouraged, which leads to an increase of collagen and elastin production. Your skin will look smoother, tighter and fuller.

How long does a vampire facial procedure take?

The procedure usually takes 45 minutes to an hour.

After you heal (which can take up to a week), your skin will look and feel brighter, dewier, more supple, and refreshed—but don’t expect those results overnight.

Because you  practitioner applies a numbing cream, the Vampire Facial won’t hurt. The procedure – including microneedling – will feel comfortable from start to finish.

What age should you get a vampire facial?

Though vampire facials can be great at any age, there is no study showing benefit in teen skin for having PRP’s or microneedling unless you have skin damage like acne scarring, traumatic scarring, post surgical. Being said, we generally do not perform them on anyone under the age of 21 without a direct benefit.

How often should I get a PRP facial?

What is the downtime for vampire facial?

The downtime for vampire facials varies from person to person, but patients typically notice a significant improvement after the first two or three days.
